Memories of a Mexican; An Historic National Monument

Image
by Fernando Cruz Quintana Commemorative poster for  Memories of a Mexican (1950) , prepared for the celebrations of the Bicentennial of Independence and the Centennial of the Revolution in 2010.  The photographs above show, on the left, Salvador Toscano, and on the right, his daughter Carmen. Few cinematographic works can succinctly relate, in just a few hours, fifty years of national history. Memorias de un mexicano/Memories of a Mexican (Carmen Toscano, 1950) is probably the best example of a film that, through documentary images, reconstructs half a century of a country's past. "The best Mexican film" In 1950, one of the greatest films in the history of Mexican cinema (the adjective refers both to its artistic magnificence and the all-encompassing nature of its story), Memoirs of a Mexican , was presented in what was a true media phenomenon at the time. At the premiere, artists, politicians and intellectuals alike gathered: Jos茅 Vasconcelos, Vicente Lombardo Toledano...

IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A LIVING FROM ART

Image
by  Evee Sandoval /Screenwriter & Producer馃幀       Art is sensibility and thought, we are in contact with art from an early age through music, cinema, painting, dance and various disciplines that we experience at an early age. What changes in art over time is the way we experience it and relate to it. Photo by Matthieu Comoy on Unsplash If you have decided to dedicate yourself to an artistic profession, surely you have heard negative comments or misunderstandings about your way of life. Surely there were no doubts when you chose your artistic path and went against all opinions, but surely there were doubts in your professional path and above all in the way of how to apply it to make a full time living from art. THE VALUE OF ART There is a lot of talk about the devaluation of art, especially when it becomes difficult to make a full-time living from artistic work. I think that such a thing as not valuing art does not exist, rather it may be that each person has a ...

Do Philosophers Understand Poetry?

A drawing-Script of Mahler's Symphony No. 5 Mov. 2 De claim is niet geweest om idee毛n of gevoelens te verknoeien. Misschien zullen we lat...

It is impossible to make a direct adaptation ... literature and cinema are two different languages: B茅la Tarr

Image
(Extracts from an interview realized on FICM 2018 ) […] FICM: You have made several films based on novels. How is your adaptation process? B脡LA TARR : My first encounter with literature was Shakespeare's Macbeth . I did it in film school. It was my first movie, and then after that, I became a film student, and somehow I ignored the school and they allowed me to do what I wanted… My teacher told me: “You have to do some kind of adaptation, from another way, we will have to say goodbye to you, because this is a school ”. And I said, "Ok, let's do Macbeth, from Shakespeare ." And you know, when you read the text and understand the meaning, and of course, you have your own relationship with the work, and afterwards it was very easy because I only chose what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to leave out. And I focused only on one part of the drama, and then I used the text as in normal life, and somehow the actors spoke in a normal language. Later, when I read L谩szl贸 Kr...
